When does the Certificate start and finish?
The Health Coach Certificate (HCC) starts on September 1st and you have up to 12 months to complete it. The Certificate can be completed within 6 months with a weekly time commitment of approx 10 hours per week. There are 6 courses that make up the Certificate, 12 x 90 - 120 min online LIVE Labs, and a practical lifestyle medicine program. This is the final intake of HCC students for 2019.
What are the benefits of doing the Health Coach Certificate?
You’ll become a PreKure certified Health Coach ready to work as a health coach. You will be eligible for professional indemnity insurance and have health coach training that is recognised as being credible and of the highest standard . You'll get the practical tools and resources you need to make your job as a Health Coach easier. You’ll learn the latest science as well as the art of coaching, and you’ll discover how to achieve sustainable behaviour change. You’ll learn and practice your coaching skills giving you confidence. Which courses make up the Certificate?
The Health Coach Certificate (HCC) is made up of the following steps:
STEP 1 - Complete a 21-day Lifestyle Medicine Program as a self-experiment.
STEP 2 - Attend fortnightly LIVE 90-120 min online and interactive labs to learn and practice your coaching . These are held in the evenings and/or weekend over 2 x 3 month periods.
STEP 3 - Complete the 6 theory courses in your own time and at your own pace:
PK101: Behaviour as Medicine
PK102: Nutrition as Medicine
PK103: Fitness as Medicine
PK104: Mind-Body Medicine
PK105: Making Sense of Research
PK106: Medications and Navigating the Healthcare System
STEP 4 - The final step involves you practising the skills you have learnt by coaching a team in a Lifestyle Medicine Program.
This is a practical course that involves you 'coaching and having your coaching observed by a PreKure Mentor Coach.
How long does it take to complete the Health Coach Certificate?
The certificate takes approx six months on a part-time basis. Each course usually takes approx 15 hours of study, and then an additional 15 hours of recommended reading and reflective practice. You have 12 months to complete the certificate.
Can I go at my own pace?
Yes. You can do the certificate in your own time and at your own pace. The majority of the courses you will work on at a time that suits you, however there is approximately 24 hours total of LIVE tutorials that will be scheduled in the evenings and/or weekends. There will be some flexibility in when these occur to ensure this works with your busy lifestyle.
Are there jobs for Health Coaches?
Yes. Health Coaches are employed in GP clinics, pharmacies, Governmental organisations, hospitals, insurance companies, corporate employers, and more. Alternatively, you can also start your own health coaching business.
Can I do the Health Coach Certificate even if I don’t plan on practising as a Health Coach?
Yes. PreKure offers two types of Certification.
(1) The Certificate outlined on this page is designed for those looking to practise as a PreKure certifed Health Coach. This is called Health Coach Certificate.
We also offer:
(2) A Health Certificate. This is designed for those looking to upskill their personal knowledge in lifestyle medicine but not planning on working as a coach.

How do I know if I will make a good Health Coach?
Are you passionate about health and wellbeing? Do you like to help other people and find it easy to build relationships? Are you a good listener? If so, health coaching could be for you! Health Coaches believe in people. They believe that people can change,and they bring optimism and efficiency to the change process.
As a health coach who is your typical client?
It really depends on what your particularity niche (as a health coach) is going to be. It is important to understand what unique strengths you have as a potential Health Coach are and then you must really understand who your ideal target market would be. Some examples of typical clients are:
- Middle-aged women going through perimenopause and struggling with weight, sleep, etc.
- Millennial women having a hard time finding balance in their lives
- Middle-aged men looking to lose weight and get fit
- Retired couples wanting to age well and stay off medication
- Cancer survivor wanting to stay in remission and be as healthy as possible
Is setting up my own health coach business achievable?
Absolutely yes. We recommend that you begin by doing this on a part-time basis first and then progress from there. By doing PreKure's Health Coach Certificate you become eligible for membership of our exclusive 'Certified Health Coaches Team. This is where we provide you with ongoing support and help in your business including:
- how to set your business up, understanding your target market, and how to get clients
- having your photo and business promoted on our PreKure website
- ongoing access to our Faculty for email q&a and support
- ongoing access to the health coach certificate course materials including all updates
Is this course accredited by NZQA?
Yes -The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA) has evaluated the Health Coach Certificate (Micro-credential) delivered by PreKure and has assessed it to be equivalent to 30 credits (300 notional learning hours) at Level 5 on the New Zealand Qualifications Framework (NZQF).
Is this Certificate recognised internationally?
We follow the International Coaches Federation (ICF) core competencies, definition of coaching and code of ethics. We also have ICF accredited coach - Annaliese Roche on our Faculty.
Do I have to be a health or medical professional to do the Health Coach Certificate?
No. There are no prior learning requirements or prerequisites to enter this Certificate.
